Muslim-Muslim ticket non-issue, South East clerics, monarchs

Some traditional rulers and religious leaders in Anambra State have dismissed misgivings over the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They told The Nation said they would vote for Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and his running mate Kashim Shetima despite two of them being Muslims.

Those who said they would vote for either Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) did not raise the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket as an excuse.

According to them, there is no issue with a Muslim-Muslim and or Christian-Christian so long as the individuals are capable.

For the traditional rulers and clerics, all of who preferred not to be named, the three leading contenders are all capable.

One of them said: “I’ve grown beyond anybody dictating to me what to do. When I lived outside this state, the person who helped me was not Igbo, but a Yoruba man.

“Why should I allow myself or my family to be deceived by mere sentiment? When the election comes, I know who I will vote for with my family.

“Therefore, I will cast my vote for the man his brother showed me how to fish instead of giving me fish.”

The founder of a pentecostal church in Onitsha said Tinubu’s experience stands him out.

“When they talk about a Muslim-Muslim ticket, I just laugh. Religion should have no place in politics,” he said.

But, a cleric believes Obi should be given a chance.

“We have tried the other political parties and they failed us, so we should give the Obi movement a chance,” he said.
