During Monday’s plenary session, Oladipo Ajomale, representative of Oshodi-Isolo constituency 2, moved a motion expressing the assembly’s confidence in Meranda’s leadership. The motion was seconded by Gbolahan Ogunleye, representing Ikorodu constituency 1, and received unanimous approval from the house.

The vote of confidence comes amidst heightened tensions at the assembly, as earlier in the day, security operatives sealed the speaker’s office, fueling rumors of Meranda’s possible resignation. Temitope Adewale, the majority leader, subsequently moved a motion to adjourn the plenary indefinitely, which was also unanimously approved.

Meranda, who made history on January 13 by becoming the first female speaker of the Lagos assembly following the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, was visibly emotional during the day’s events. Surrounded by supportive lawmakers, assembly staff, and security personnel, Meranda shed tears as she was hailed by supporters at the assembly entrance.

A security presence was observed around the complex, with police and task force officers stationed in vehicles and patrolling the premises to ensure order.

The situation at the Lagos State House of Assembly remains tense, as Obasa, who was removed from his position while abroad, has challenged the legality of the process, maintaining that he is still the rightful speaker. Obasa argues that due procedure was not followed in his removal and Meranda’s subsequent appointment.
