Master plan to reposition UBTH on the way – Health Minister
*As Oba of Minister blames give strike, poor facilities for poor healthcare
The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has described inadequate modern health facilities and incessant strike by health workers as a dangerous hindrance for accessing health care at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Oba Ewuare II, who said this on Monday evening when he played host to the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewale, in his palace in Benin, noted that the absence of modern facilities, coupled with incessant strike could hamper early detection and treatment of serious ailments, including cancer.
According to him, the situation at various levels in the health sector in the country had hindered many rural dwellers from accessing health care.
He appealed to the federal government to address the recurring problems in the health sector, especially in the area of workers’ salaries and adequate facilities.
The monarch charged the Minister and the management of the UBTH to be objective in the selection of a professionally qualified candidate as the next Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the institution rather than playing politics that could be inimical to the people welfare.
Earlier, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewale, informed the Monarch that he was in Benin to commission projects executed by the management of UBTH, as well as to solicit his royal blessings.
Prof. Adewale who hailed Oba Ewuare’s innovations and reformation agenda in the country, assured that he was developing a master plan to reposition UBTH as one of the best in the country.
