The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and 21 other lawmakers have resigned their membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), alongside the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Assembly’s Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, confirmed the development in a statement released on Saturday evening, listing the affected lawmakers.
Those who defected with the governor include the Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail Falgore; the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu Butu; the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain; the Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Shehu Fammar; and the Chief Whip, Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki.
Others represent constituencies including Ajingi, Albasu, Bagwai/Shanono, Bebeji, Bunkure, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gabasawa, Garko, Gwale, Karaye, Kura/Garun Malam, Madobi, Minjibir, Rano, Tarauni and Wudil.
The statement said a total of 22 members of the House were involved in the defection, adding that the list had been verified and authenticated by the Assembly.
According to the Assembly, the announcement was made to properly inform the public and clarify the political position of the affected lawmakers following the governor’s defection.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had on Friday formally resigned his membership of the NNPP, citing deepening internal crisis and the need to protect the broader interest of the people of Kano State.
He was said to have resigned alongside 21 members of the State Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and the 44 local government council chairmen.
The development is expected to further weaken the NNPP’s influence in the state, as more party members continue to align with the governor’s political direction. The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, is among top government officials who have also announced their resignation from the party.
