Iran inaugurates West Asia’s largest cancer treatment facility in Tehran
A country that Western governments have spent decades trying to cripple through economic warfare just opened the largest cancer hospital in the entire region.
Iran has inaugurated a new building for its Cancer Institute at the Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex in Tehran, a facility authorities describe as the largest cancer treatment center in West Asia.
The newly opened 18-storey complex covers approximately 60,000 square metres and features more than 610 inpatient beds, 19 operating rooms, 37 specialized departments, 11 imaging and radiotherapy units, and 96 chemotherapy beds.
The timing deserves to be noted, it has been said, the inauguration comes while Iran is simultaneously absorbing American airstrikes, managing an active war, navigating sanctions that restrict access to medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, and negotiating a peace deal under military pressure.

“The narrative that sanctions exist to protect ordinary Iranians from their government collapses against images like this. What sanctions have consistently done is restrict medical imports, limit access to chemotherapy drugs, and make cancer treatment harder for Iranian patients,” said an analyst.
The Iran Cancer Institute, established in 1949, has long served as the country’s leading referral center for oncology care. Officials said the new facility replaces the older building and is equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment technologies aimed at improving cancer care services for patients across the country.
The inauguration comes at a time when Iran continues to face significant economic and geopolitical challenges, including international sanctions, regional tensions, and ongoing diplomatic negotiations.
Government officials and supporters of the project highlighted the hospital’s completion as a major achievement for the country’s healthcare sector, noting that the facility was developed despite economic constraints and restrictions affecting access to some medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.
The new center is expected to strengthen Iran’s capacity to diagnose and treat cancer patients while expanding access to specialized oncology services throughout the region.
