INEC begins process as 2.2m voters set to decide Edo’s next Governor
*17 parties partake in election holding in 4,519 polling units *Ighodalo, Akpata, Okpebolo major contenders
After months of campaigns and intrigues, voters in Edo State are set to cast their ballots in the governorship election with 2.2 million Personal Voter’s Cards (PVCs) collected.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had cleared 17 parties for the September 21st election as candidates battle to take over the reins of leadership from incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki. His tenure ends in November.
Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Monday Okpebholo and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) are the major contenders for the battle.
The election will be held in 4,519 polling units across the 18 local government areas of Edo State.
As at 7:55 am, the Nigeria Police Force had made significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb electoral violence in the state with the arrest of two suspected political thugs.
Earlier before that, INEC Adhoc officials were still at the RAC, waiting to be escorted by police to their respective polling units.
