The AthIetics Federation of Nigeria (AFN)’s recently reconstituted committees have been tasked to seek for athletes welfare and good performance at future games and events.
This directive was handed down by the AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, who insisted that their coming on board as committees’ heads and members was to seek for athIetes welfare that would directly and effectively translate to better performance.
He noted that members of the committees were selected based on merit and individual competence and hoped that such virtues would be deployed to the benefit of AthIetes.
Speaking in a telephone interview with The DEFENDER in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, on Sunday, Chief Okowa said, “Nigerians are expecting greater performance from the Federation at the All African Games in Ghana. AthIetes must be adequately prepared to compete at that level and more.
“Therefore, all Committees must be upstanding to hit the ground running.”
Accordingbto him, however, some of the committees’ heads have started co-ordinating their members for action.
“Head of Competition Committee, Nesiama, has his cup full and would not spare any thought than to hit the ground running.
“Head of the Technical Department, Samuel Onikeku, did so well in the last two years that he got his job back. Athletes doping, injuries, performance and welfare would be the areas that would be used to access some of the committees moving forward,” the AFN President told The DEFENDER.
