According to him, the essence of democracy, which is government of the people, by the people, and for the people, has been defeated.

Olubo said some of the challenges facing Nigerian democracy include monetization of politics, where politics has become a trade with the highest bidder often emerging victorious, undermining the democratic process.

Poverty and lack of conscience is another hindrance to our democratic principles, as poverty leads to a lack of conscience among politicians and Nigerians, prioritizing personal gain over national development.

Favouritism, corruption, nepotism, tribalism, and self-interest also hinder the political system, while the imposition of candidates by party leadership restricts people’s choices and undermines democracy.

For better democracy in Nigeria, Olubo suggested re-orientation and education as a must, to prioritize national development over personal gain.

He also advocated for discouraging money politics and vote buying, implementing policies to reduce the influence of money in politics and promote fairer elections.

Additionally, electoral reform needs to be encouraged to ensure free and fair elections, allowing people’s choices to prevail.

Furthermore, INEC should be independent, with its chairman appointed through the judiciary to enhance credibility.

Finally, anti-thuggery measures should be implemented to eliminate thuggery in politics and promote a more peaceful and democratic environment.

Dayo Olubo Dayo believes that Nigeria’s democratic system requires significant reforms to function effectively and serve the people’s interests.
