Nigeria’s former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over what he described as a suspicious credit alert into one of his private bank accounts, warning that the incident may point to a serious breach of financial privacy.
He has reportedly put security agencies on notice over the incident.
Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday August 7, 2026.
According to Shaibu, the transaction originated from an individual or entity unknown to Atiku and carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
He said neither Atiku nor his campaign organisation solicited, authorised or had any knowledge of the payment.
“The circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to His Excellency,” the statement said, stressing that the affected account was strictly private and its details were not publicly available.
Shaibu questioned how an unknown individual or organisation could have obtained the confidential banking details of the former Vice President.
He warned that if the private financial information of a former Vice President and leading presidential candidate could be accessed and used without his knowledge, it raised serious concerns about the safety of the financial information of ordinary Nigerians.
The statement further raised the possibility that the account details could have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to confidential information.

Atiku’s media aide described the incident as part of what he called a series of suspicious activities occurring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he described as attempts at character assassination, insisting that such tactics would not deter Atiku from pursuing his political objectives.
“Such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again,” the statement said.
Shaibu added that Atiku, popularly known as the Waziri Adamawa, remained focused on providing Nigerians with what he described as credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s challenges.
