Buhari meets APC, PDP in 1st meeting of national unity, says it’s maturity of democracy

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has done what arguably no head of government in the country has done since the start of ongoing Fourth Republic by the fist-of-its-kind inter-party parley he held with executives of both the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.

President Buhari, addressing the parley, said not only the meeting was not a party occasion but also that it was a symbol of national unity and an indication of maturity of democracy.

The President said, “I thank you sincerely, collectively and individually for finding time from your busy schedules to come all the way to Abuja and welcome me back home.

“This visit signifies the unity of Nigeria. It is not a party occasion. It is not a political gathering. It is a symbol of our National unity. It is also an expression of the maturity of our democracy.

“Multi-party democracy is a very tried and tested form of government. Opposition does not mean hostility, enmity or antagonism. Democracy needs opposition, one which is vibrant but responsible.

“I am very pleased to see you assembled here all shades of opinion in Nigeria. Please convey to our countrymen and women in your respective states my deep gratitude to all those who prayed for my recovery. I am imploring all Nigerians to continue praying for peace and prosperity in Nigeria.

“I thank you so much God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The APC delegation was led by the Chairman of the Party Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Former Senate President Ken Nnamani, Former Information Minister Tony Momoh, Former Governor of Bayelsa State Chief Timipre Sylva, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, among others.

While for the PDP, was the Chairman, Caretaker committee of the Party Ahmed Markarfi, Senator Ben Obi, Senator Stella Omu, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, and Professor T. Adeniran.

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo was also in attendance.
