BREAKING: Nigeria Air unveiled as national carrier
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the name for a new national carrier and has unveiled its logo.
This unveiling was done on Wednesday at the Farnborough International Airshow in London, United Kingdom, by the nation’s Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, who said the national carrier for the country will now be Nigeria Air.
During the unveiling, the minister said, “this will be a National Carrier that is Private sector-led and driven. It is a business, not a social service. Government will not be involved in running it or deciding who runs it. The investors will have full responsibility for this.”
Sirika said, “The Nigerian Government will not own more than 5% (maximum) of the new National Carrier. Government will not be involved in running it or deciding who runs it,” he said
He added that government is in talks with aircraft providers, “We’ve been talking to Airbus and Boeing (and they’re present at this event) regarding the aircraft for which we will be making announcements very soon. We are currently negotiating.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had promised, based on demands by stakeholders, to give to Nigeria a befitting national carrier.
He however said to do that successfully Nigerians must be told why the defunct national carrier, Nigerian Airways, died with a view that it will serve as guide in reestablishing a new one.
The government had recently promised that the national carrier, which name and logo were promised to be unveiled this week in UK, would take off in December of this year.
