The armed forces in the country made this known as they announced total control of the Federal Government on Sunday December 7, 2025.

The dissolution of the government was made by a group of soldiers during a broadcast on Benin’s state TV on Sunday.

The group, labelling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, announced that President Patrice Talon and all political office holders have been effectively removed.

All state institutions were also dissolved.

Talon, the democratic President of Benin Republic, has been on the saddle since 2016 and had promised to leave office in 2026 after the presidential poll.

Talon’s whereabouts were unknown and the French Embassy reportedly said on X that “gunfire was reported at Camp Guezo” near the president’s official residence. It urged French citizens to remain indoors for security.

However, Benin’s president later announced that Talon was safe and that the military has restored the situation to normalcy.
