BREAKING: Iran names Interim Supreme Leader after Khamenei’s death
Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council announced that Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a senior Shiite cleric and former head of the country’s seminaries, has been selected as the clerical member of a three-person Interim Leadership Council.
Tehran — Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s governing bodies have appointed a new interim leader to oversee the country during the transition period.
Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council announced that Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a senior Shiite cleric and former head of the country’s seminaries, has been selected as the clerical member of a three-person Interim Leadership Council.
Under Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, this temporary council will carry out the duties of the Supreme Leader until the country’s Assembly of Experts elects a permanent successor.
Arafi — previously a member of the powerful Guardian Council and respected within Iran’s religious establishment — will share leadership responsibilities with President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.
The appointment comes as Iran navigates an uncertain political landscape following the reported killing of Khamenei in recent strikes, triggering both domestic upheaval and heightened regional tensions.
