BLASPHEMY: Sokoto lifts curfew, bans processions

The Sokoto State Government has lifted the curfew imposed on the capital metropolis with immediate effect but places ban on all forms of processions in the state until further notice.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal announced this on Friday in a statement by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Isah Galadanci.

The statement reads in part: “Acting on enabling powers under section 176 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, section 1, 2 and 4 of the Public Order Act and section 15 of Sokoto State Peace Preservation Law, Governor of Sokoto State, Rt Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, Mutawallen Sokoto has after due consultations, lifted the curfew imposed on Sokoto metropolis with immediate effect .”

The Governor urged the general public to be law abiding,stressing the need for peaceful co-existence amongst the people in the State.

The curfew was imposed last Saturday May 14 following massive protests in the state capital by youths against blasphemy of Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by Deborah Yakubu Samuel, a Christian student of Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), leading to her being killed by a mob penultimate Thursday May 12.

The DEFENDER recalls that two suspects were arrested by the state police commander in connection with the murder of the girl.  The youths, during the protests, also demanded for their release.
