Australia backs Lebanon’s sovereignty, oppose occupation, FM Wrong tells Israel
The situation has dampened hopes for de-escalation, despite Donald Trump expressing optimism about the possibility of a deal to end the conflict.
Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, has told her Israeli counterpart that Australia supports the sovereignty of Lebanon and opposes any occupation of its southern region.
Wong’s remarks come after Benjamin Netanyahu’s government outlined plans to establish what it described as a “defensive buffer” in southern Lebanon, aimed at countering the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.
In her statement, Wong reiterated Australia’s broader position against regional escalation, including condemnation of Iran over tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. She emphasized that Australia does not support any move that would lead to Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory.
The development comes amid continued hostilities, with Israel vowing to maintain strikes against Iranian targets. The situation has dampened hopes for de-escalation, despite Donald Trump expressing optimism about the possibility of a deal to end the conflict.
The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts continue alongside ongoing military tensions in the region.
