Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has reacted to the disqualification of Governor Obaseki by the APC screening committee, describing it as “an hatchet job.”
Oyegun, a retired Permanent Secretary of the Federal Government and Third Republic Governor of Edo State and first APC substantive national chairman to emerge from party convention, will be remembered for his ability to usher the party into victory over incumbent during the 2015 presidential election that sacked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power. He was succeeded by Oshiomole.
In a statement signed by his Public Affairs Adviser, Ray Morphy, the former governor said: “The disqualification of Obaseki by the APC Screening Panel is a hatchet job aimed at installing a stooge that will allow some people unfettered access to Edo Treasury.
“While not a surprise, that disqualification is clear indication that internal democracy has been murdered in APC, a party which we founded on the principles of fairplay and good conscience!
“I daresay that APC will suffer dire consequences in Edo state if this disqualification is not speedily reversed.
“As a matter of fact, Oshiomhole is indeed the one who is guilty of anti party, not Obaseki. Oshiomhole is the one who is acting unconstitutionally not Obaseki. I hope that Oshiomhole will not go down in history as the undertaker of APC.”
In a video statement, he expressed a hope that Oshiomole, to whom he handed over the affairs of APC, would not bury the party by his attitude.
In a report published yesterday by The DEFENDER, it was said that no ruling political party had been run as a private estate of its national chairman and other personal interest he protects like the APC under Oshiomole.
