“Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” Mamdani stated.

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, has strongly condemned recent military strikes on Iran carried out by the United States and Israel, describing the action as a “catastrophic escalation” of what he called an illegal war of aggression.

In a statement posted on his official social media account, Mr Mamdani said the strikes represented a dangerous widening of the conflict.

“Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war,” he said.

The mayor added that Americans do not support another prolonged overseas conflict, particularly one aimed at regime change.

“Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” he stated.

Mr Mamdani said city authorities are taking precautionary steps amid heightened global tensions. He confirmed that he has been in contact with the city’s Police Commissioner and emergency management officials to review and strengthen safety measures.

“I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe,” he said. “We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution.”

Addressing members of the Iranian community in New York, the mayor offered reassurance and solidarity.

“I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here,” he said.

The remarks come as tensions rise following the strikes, with political leaders across the United States divided over the military action and its potential consequences.
