Update reaching us at The DEFENDER indicated a dramatic turn of events as, on Wednesday May 29, 2024 that Nigerians should be focusing on the politics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s celebration of his “one year in office”, a remarkable development occurred over the emirship tussle in Kano State.

The development being that the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, was ordered to vacate the main royal palace immediately and this order, this time around, was no longer coming from any court but by a group called the Forum of Chiefs in Nigeria.

This globalised multi–lingual online newspaper reports that the decision was reached after the conflicting orders of Federal High Court and Kano State High Court issued against and in favour, respectively, of reinstatement of Sanusi II as 16th Emir of Kano following a legislative Bill by the state House of Assembly, assented to by the Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.

According to our media source, the Forum of Chiefs in Nigeria, which comprises traditional leaders from across the country, issued a stern warning to Sanusi II, urging him to stop attempting to sneak back into the palace through the back door.

The chiefs made it clear that Sanusi II must comply with the court’s order evicting him and leave the palace immediately.

Sanusi II’s reinstatement has generated balls of fire in controversy since he was presented his letter of appointment and returned to the ancient palace as Emir of Kano by the state Government.

The dispute has led to a standoff between the Emir and the government, with both sides refusing to budge.

The Federal High Court’s decision ordering Sanusi II to vacate the palace was seen as a major blow to his efforts to remain in power although, amidst that, he had held his first First Emirate Council meeting with 40 District Heads of Kano State Emirate pledging their allegianceto him.

The Forum of Chiefs’ latest order has further intensified the situation, leaving many wondering what will happen next.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Sanusi II and the government that reinstated him will respond to the chiefs’ demands.

The question by many watchers of events has commonly been: “Will he comply with the order and leave the palace, or will he continue to resist?” Only time will tell.
