The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, former Nigerian Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), and President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Omar Alieu Touray, on Thursday, met with the new military leaders in Niger.

They were in Niamey as delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meeting wthe Nigerien military government at the instance of President of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS, Bola Ahmed Tinubu
The delegation was given a mandate to expeditiously resolve the current political impasse in the country.
A statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said the action was in line with the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held last weekend in Abuja.
The president has also sent a separate delegation led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria on the Niger crisis.
Briefing the two delegations, President Tinubu charged them to engage all stakeholders robustly with a view to doing whatever it takes to ensure a conclusive and amicable resolution of the situation in Niger for the purposes of African peace and development rather than a move to adopt the geopolitical positions of other nations.
The DEFENDER can authoritatively report that the delegation returned to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, in the early hours of Friday but details of the outcome were not available as at the time of filing this report.
