The Governor had repeatedly threatened to leave the party if the Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership tussle favours Sheriff.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, May 18, the PDP group believed to be loyal to National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said Fayose was worried because he had lost his grip over the party in the state.
In the statement signed by the Deputy Chairman and Secretary of the party in the state, Olasunkanmi Ogunbiyi and Ilesanmi Obe, respectively, said “the exit of Fayose from PDP will not adversely affect the fortunes of the party.
“All the ward, local government and state executives as well as the state’s leadership caucus remain intact.
“Most of the elected and appointed officials at all levels of government have resolved to remain in PDP and are not following Fayose if he eventually defects again.
“All the 177 wards and 16 local governments still believe in the PDP as the party that delivered and performed best so far since the creation of Ekiti State.
“The incontrovertible fact is that on the two occasions he won the governorship elections, it was the PDP that provided the platform and opportunities for him.”
The statement said Fayose failed when he tried his popularity by contesting for the Central Senatorial seat while in Labour Party, which he lost to Senator Babafemi Ojudu of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) who later became an APC Senator in the Seventh Assembly.
“If he decides to leave PDP again, we shall not miss him, as the party remains strong and in fact under the able leadership of Chief Clement Awoyelu, the first state chairman of the party.
“When Fayose dumped the party in 2007, we went ahead to win the governorship election and all the nine National Assembly seats and 13 House of Assembly seats without him,” the faction added.
It has however been insinuated by many watchers of events that the burial of the former ruling party (PDP) prophesied by former President Olusegun Obasanjo may be in the offing even the few that remain in the party may eventually decide to join the Change Regime of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government of the All Progressives (APC), a party they (PDP) had said in 2014 would not last for one year from creation.
