Fulani settlements attack: Reprisal killings frustrating S/Kaduna peace efforts — DSS
Reprisal killings among communities in Southern Kaduna is thwarting security agencies’ efforts towards peaceful resolutions of the crisis in the area, a senior security official said yesterday.
A top official of the Directorate of Security Service (DSS) told a national newspaper in confidence that the renewed attacks by some communities in the area on herders will further escalate the crisis.
He said between January 21 and 22, two Fulani herders’ settlements were attacked, killing two and injuring many, in Sanga and Kaura local governments of the state.
The intelligence chief said, “On 21 January, 2017, about 10:30pm at a Fulani settlement close to LEA Primary School, in Zankan village of Kaura local government area, a gang of armed bandits, suspected to be natives of the area, stormed the settlement in an unmarked vehicle and opened fire on the herdsmen, resulting in the death of Yunusa Musa, while four others sustained gunshot injuries.”
He said about 24 hours later, another incident occurred at Kaura village, in Fadan Ninzo district in Sanga local government, where “a gang of armed hoodlums suspected to be natives of the area, attacked and shot one Abdullahi Yakubu, a Fulani herdsman, who died instantly.”
He said the gunmen also inflicted gunshot wounds on the relative of the deceased, when he attempted to escape the attack.
“These renewed killings are really thwarting whatever peace achieved in the area. The whole thing will look like a vicious circle. It is very unfortunate,” the security chief said.
