Osoba finally clears June 12 believers who served Abacha government

Former Ogun State Governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Olusegun Osoba, has said there was an agreement that loyalists of winner of the June 12 1993 elections, MKO Abiola, could serve under military dictator, Sani Abacha.

By this straightforwardness coming from the frank speaking politician, the former Managing Director of Daily Times may have finally hit a truth that no single June 12 advocate has ever told.

He has therefore cleared those, including Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Chief Ebenezer Babatope and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, being accused  of dumping MKO Abiola and June 12 struggle for Abacha of any wrongdoing, even as he warned their accusers against distorting recent history.

Osoba, who claimed to also be at the meeting, spoke during the public presentation of his memoir, ‘Battlelines: Adventures in Journalism and Politics’, on Monday in Lagos.

The veteran journalist said former Lagos Governor, Lateef Jakande, was among those allowed to serve under the government.

“Now, people have been berating those who served Abacha. We held a meeting, fully attended on a Sunday and we resolved that those invited by Abacha should go and serve Abacha. But some people just try to falsify history. And they start blaming those who served Abacha. Jakande was given the go ahead to serve under Abacha. I want to plead with us to stop distorting history,” he said.
