SAN jailed 1 month for ‘perverting course of justice’
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Joseph Nwobike, was Monday jailed for one month without option of fine for perverting the course of justice.
In her judgment, Justice Raliat Adebiyi of the Lagos High court, Ikeja said the level of culpability of the defendant over a period of time was high, hence the sentence.
She said, “The message to the society is that no one is above the law. The court however grants a light sentence. He is hereby sentenced to one month of 30 days.”
Earlier, she had said Nwobike perverted the course of justice by offering gratification to a public officer and by sending text message to a judicial official with instruction to influence the assignment of several cases to the said officer.
In his defence at the trial, Nwobike admitted to giving N750,000 to Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the Federal High Court but said the money was to assist in the treatment of the judge’s mother who had kidney disease.
