Nigerian Navy appoints first female Commodore

The Nigerian Navy on Monday promoted and decorated Navy Captain Jamila Malafa with the rank of Commodore, which is a rank equivalent to a Brigadier-General in the Nigerian Army.

With the promotion, Commodore Malafa becomes the very first female from Northern Nigeria to be so decorated as a one-star general.

Speaking on the decoration, the Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP) at the Nigerian Navy headquarters in Abuja, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, described the promotion as a thing of pride.

According to Babalola, only a few women have achieved such height and Malafa’s resume shows that she deserves the promotion having attended lots of courses and training during her career.

Babalola used the opportunity to call on all Nigerian women in all the armed forces to aspire for the very top of their career and profession as there are no limits to their aspirations.
