Netanyahu Allies Accused of Intimidating Arab Voters, Questioning Their Right to Vote

Arab political leaders allege voter suppression as Netanyahu warns supporters of rising Arab turnout in Israeli elections

Allies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been accused of intimidating Arab voters and questioning their legitimacy to participate in elections, amid growing controversy over political messages targeting Palestinian citizens of Israel.

The allegations emerged during Israel’s October 27, 2026, general election, after Netanyahu and his right-wing allies raised concerns about increased turnout among Arab voters, prompting accusations of incitement from Arab political leaders.

Reports indicated that supporters of Netanyahu’s Likud party circulated messages urging Jewish Israelis to vote in response to what they described as rising Arab participation.

According to Reuters, vehicles displaying Likud flags drove through Jerusalem blaring the Islamic call to prayer while urging people to vote because “Arabs are voting”.

Netanyahu also shared messages on social media accusing Arab voters of attempting to influence the election against his political bloc.

In one post, he alleged that supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood were “raiding the polling stations and stealing the elections”, while urging his supporters to turn out and vote for Likud.

The remarks triggered criticism from Arab political leaders, who accused the prime minister of using inflammatory rhetoric to discourage Arab participation and mobilise right-wing voters.

Yousef Jabareen, leader of the Arab-majority Joint List, accused Netanyahu of questioning the legitimacy of Arab citizens’ participation in the electoral process.

Mansour Abbas, leader of the United Arab List, also described Netanyahu’s messaging as a scare tactic intended to increase turnout among right-wing voters.

Meanwhile, Adalah, a legal centre representing Arab minority rights in Israel, reported receiving complaints from Arab voters about alleged attempts to discourage them from voting.

The organisation also reported delays at some polling stations in Arab-majority communities and shortages of ballot papers printed in Arabic. It said the concerns had been brought to the attention of the relevant electoral authorities.

However, the specific claim that Netanyahu’s supporters physically forced Arab voters out of election centres on the grounds that voting was meant for Israelis rather than Arabs could not be independently verified from the reports reviewed.

Arab citizens make up approximately one-fifth of Israel’s population and are entitled to vote in its national elections.

The controversy has renewed concerns about the treatment of Arab voters and the role of political rhetoric in shaping participation in Israel’s electoral process.
