Qatar Calls for Gulf Self-Reliance as Iran War Fuels Debate Over U.S. Security Role

Qatar has called on Gulf countries to strengthen their own defence capabilities, warning that the conflict involving Iran has exposed the limitations of relying solely on the United States for regional security.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, made the remarks in Abu Dhabi, where he argued that the changing security environment in the Middle East required Gulf states to develop greater military self-sufficiency.
Al-Ansari said the Iran conflict had demonstrated that dependence on Washington’s military presence alone could not provide a sustainable security framework for the region.
He urged Gulf nations to invest in independent defence capabilities while continuing to maintain strategic partnerships with the United States.
According to the Qatari official, stronger regional capabilities would allow Gulf states to respond more effectively to emerging threats while preserving their longstanding security relationships with Washington.
