Gov Namadi Names New Emir of Gumel
The new Emir emerged after a competitive succession process involving nine aspirants who initially expressed interest in succeeding the late Emir.
The Jigawa State Government has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the new Emir of Gumel, making him the 17th Emir in the history of the ancient Gumel Emirate.
Dr Lawan succeeds his father, the late Alhaji (Dr) Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after spending about 46 years on the throne.
His appointment followed the recommendation of the Gumel Emirate Kingmakers and subsequent consideration by the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The approval was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim.
According to the statement, before his elevation to the throne, Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani was the Chiroman Gumel and also served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

The kingmakers, under the leadership of the Wazirin Gumel, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, conducted the selection process, after which Lawan was recommended for the traditional stool.
The state government subsequently approved his appointment, bringing to an end the process of selecting a successor to the late Emir, who had ruled Gumel for nearly half a century.
Governor Umar Namadi commended the Gumel Emirate kingmakers for their role in conducting what he described as an important traditional process leading to the emergence of the new Emir.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the members of the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, particularly the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, for their contributions and advice throughout the selection process.
Namadi congratulated Dr Lawan on his emergence as the 17th Emir of Gumel and prayed for wisdom, good health and a successful reign.
He urged the new Emir to build on the legacy of his predecessors and continue to promote peace, unity and development among the people of Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State.
The appointment came just days after the death of the late Emir, Alhaji (Dr) Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who was widely regarded as one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the state, having spent approximately 46 years on the throne.
The Jigawa State Government again extended its condolences to the royal family, the people of Gumel Emirate, the State Council of Chiefs and the entire people of Jigawa over the death of the former Emir.
The government described the death of the late monarch as a significant loss to Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State as a whole.
It prayed to Allah SWT to forgive the late Emir’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
The government also prayed for Allah to grant the royal family, the Gumel Emirate and the people of Jigawa the strength and patience to bear the loss.
