Grief in DEFENDER, Journalism Community As Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, dies at 56

The management and staff of Defender Media Limited publishers of The DEFENDER Newspaper and the entire journalism community in Nigeria have been thrown into a mourning situation with shocking demise of veteran journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, who died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos at the age of 56.
Oladipo, a cherished and valued associate of The DEFENDER family and former Politics Editor of PUNCH Newspapers, reportedly died after suffering a sudden health complication at his office.
His death came as a shock to his colleagues, friends and associates, particularly as he was said to have appeared to be in his usual state of health earlier in the day.
According to accounts surrounding his final moments, Oladipo was at his office when he suddenly took ill. He reportedly drove himself to a hospital but was said to have suffered what was suspected to be a heart attack while receiving emergency medical attention.
It was gathered that the veteran journalist had visited the gym with his wife earlier on Tuesday before returning to his regular activities.
He was also active on social media during the day, with his last known post reportedly published at about 2:50 p.m., only a few hours before news of his death began to circulate among his friends and professional colleagues.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the circumstances of his death remained sketchy, while an official statement from his family was still being awaited.
Oladipo was the Managing Editor and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publishers of The Eagle Online, which he founded in January 2011.
He was among the early Nigerian journalists who embraced digital journalism at a time when online news publishing was still developing in the country. Through his work, he contributed to the transition from traditional newspaper journalism to digital-first news reporting.
Under his leadership, The Eagle Online developed into a broad-based digital news platform covering politics, business, sports, crime, health, entertainment, religion, lifestyle and other major national issues.
His death represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s journalism profession, particularly the country’s growing digital media sector.

“As at 2:50 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, he still shared his set of publication links with me, topped by the story, Governor’s ADC, CSO Still in Custody Over Rift Within APC. At 5:07 p.m., I also shared with him my publication link, headlined Save Our Businesses From Extortionists, AMATO Urges Maritime Police, Army, Navy, without knowing that, by that time, the senior colleague who had actively shared publication links with me as recently as 2:50 p.m. was no longer alive.

“It was at the International Press Institute (IPI) annual workshop that we first connected, and he distinguished himself excellently. Given all we shared professionally and personally, his sudden death yesterday is a loss that, for me, will take a long time to recover from,” said Prince Bashir Adefaka, CEO/Editor-in-Chief, Defender Media Limited, publishers of The DEFENDER Newspaper.
