Niger State Governor Umar Bago pays condolence visit to Sultan of Sokoto over Sardaunan Sokoto’s demise

The governor was received by the Sultan, who was assisted by members of his Sultanate Council Sokoto including the Wazirin Sokoto His Royal Highness Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Galadiman Garin Sokoto His Royal Highness Alhaji Aliyu Atahiru Galadanci, Sai’n Kilgori His Royal Highness Dr. Mohammed Jabi Kilgori, among others, at his palace in Sokoto on Friday, July 31, 2026.

Governor of Niger State, Mallam Mohammed Umar Bago, has paid a condolence visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, mni, over the demise of the Sardaunan Sokoto and former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Ambassador Abubakar Alhaji Alhaji.

Governor Bago was accompanied by the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Muhammad Idris Gobir, alongside other members of the Niger State Government delegation.

The visit was aimed at expressing condolences and solidarity with the Sultan and the people of Sokoto over the loss.

The DEFENDER reports that the late Alhaji Alhaji, a career civil servant who rose to the peak of his career as permanent secretary in the Federal Civil Service to later become Minister of Finance, Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, succeeded the later premier of Northern Region Sir Ahmadu Bello as the Sardaunan in 1990 and held the Sokoto Caliphate’s revered traditional title until his passing on Thursday July 30, 2026.
