Gas leak crisis deepens in Bille kingdom as residents cry out for help

By SUMAYYAH ADEFAKA

Residents of Bille Kingdom and other oil-producing communities in Rivers State have raised fresh concerns over persistent gas leakages endangering lives and destroying their environment.

For months, affected communities have reported severe air pollution, contaminated water sources, and rising health challenges linked to the continuous gas leaks.

Residents says the situation has reached alarming levels, with many residents falling ill and struggling to access clean air and safe drinking water.

Despite repeated complaints and appeals to authorities, community members claim their voices have largely gone unheard.

The ongoing crisis has sparked frustration, with residents questioning how such environmental hazards can persist in regions that generate significant oil revenue.

“It’s difficult to understand how this can continue while so much wealth is taken from our land,” a resident lamented, echoing the sentiments of many in the region.

Community leaders also expressed concern over what they describe as a pattern of neglect.

According to them, peaceful calls for intervention are often ignored, while any form of protest or resistance is quickly condemned.

The human cost of the crisis remains a major concern. Families, including vulnerable children, are reportedly exposed daily to harmful gases, raising fears of long-term health consequences.

Giving account of the situation, TG Eferebo argue that financial compensation alone cannot address the scale of damage being experienced. “₦100 million cannot repair lungs damaged by gas exposure,” a community advocate stated. “Lives are worth far more than compensation.”

As pressure mounts, residents are calling on government authorities and oil companies to take urgent action to stop the leakages, restore the environment, and prioritize the health and safety of host communities.

The situation in Bille Kingdom highlights broader concerns about environmental management and accountability in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions, where communities continue to demand justice, protection, and a voice in decisions affecting their future.
