Abuja tense as protesting workers accost Wike’s motorcade, claim he escaped from back gate

By OUR REPORTER

Abuja witnessed heightened tension on Monday, January 26, 2026, as protesting workers reportedly chased the motorcade of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, amid an ongoing strike over unresolved welfare and salary issues.

The incident occurred as the workers, who have been on strike, gathered to press demands relating to unpaid entitlements, poor welfare conditions and other lingering labour grievances.

A video sighted by The DEFENDER showed the protesters becoming visibly agitated when Wike’s convoy passed through the protest area. The workers were heard chanting and advancing toward the vehicles, prompting security operatives attached to the minister to intervene and restore order.

The protest reflects growing frustration among FCT workers, who accuse the authorities of failing to address their long-standing demands despite repeated appeals and negotiations.

The confrontation further underscores the tense labour situation in the nation’s capital and has renewed calls for urgent dialogue between the government and the striking workers to prevent an escalation of unrest.
