According to her, the legislature has a constitutional duty to act decisively once there is clarity that the 2025 tax laws signed by the president differ from what were duly passed by the National Assembly.
The National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been urged to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if allegations that he signed into law tax bills different from those passed by the legislature are proven to be true.

The call was made by a chieftain of the opposition coalition’s African Democratic Congress (ADC), Lauretta Onochie, in a statement shared on her verified Facebook page on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
Onochie argued that any deliberate alteration of bills passed by the National Assembly before presidential assent would amount to treason against the Nigerian state and must not be ignored by lawmakers.
According to her, the legislature has a constitutional duty to act decisively once there is clarity that the 2025 tax laws signed by the president differ from what were duly passed by the National Assembly.
“Dear National Assembly, when a President commits treason, silence becomes complicity,” she stated.
She called on lawmakers to immediately invoke their oversight powers, initiate a transparent investigation into the alleged alterations, and act in line with the provisions of the Constitution where evidence exists.
“Where evidence exists, commence impeachment proceedings as prescribed by the Constitution,” she said, urging legislators to set aside partisan considerations and personal loyalties.
Onochie stressed that members of the National Assembly owe their allegiance to the Constitution and the people of Nigeria, not to any individual office holder.
She warned that Nigerians would remember the actions or inaction of lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that electoral outcomes are determined by the people, not by what she described as a “lawless mandate.”
“History will judge this moment. Defend the Republic of Nigeria, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that no one, however powerful, is above Nigeria’s laws,” she said.
The former presidential aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari further charged legislators to act with courage and a sense of duty, insisting that their ultimate loyalty must remain with Nigeria and its constitutional order.
