Why APC must not win 2027 election, says El-Rufai

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has provided a basic reason the All Progressives Congress (APC) must not be allowed to remain in power from the 2027 general elections, saying “we may not have a country” if it wins.

El-Rufai disclosed this during his visit to Sokoto for grassroots mobilisation campaign for the opposition coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The former Kaduna governor said he joined the coalition to ensure the APC is voted out of power.

El-Rufai, a former APC chieftain, said he is ready to mobilise Nigerians to eject the “incompetent” ruling party.

“I’m not in politics to get anything for myself. I’m in politics to serve,” he said.

“When the government does not serve the people, it is my duty as a senior citizen to come out and condemn it and take steps to reverse the situation.

“That is why we come together as people opposed to the policies of this government to form the coalition, which has resulted in the adoption of ADC.

“We are in Sokoto to begin the process of mobilising Nigerians against the APC government anywhere and the federal government in Abuja.

“I believe that if we allow this party and the government to continue for a second term in office, what remains of Nigeria’s social capital will be destroyed, and we may not have a country at all. This is a fight for our lives.”

El-Rufai was one of the founding leaders of the APC, but in March 2025, he left the ruling party for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

His exit came over a year after his ministerial appointment was blocked by the same President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after he (Tinubu) had publicly and privately begged him (El-Rufai) to stay back and work with and had nominated him for National Assembly’s approval.

Although Tinubu himself has yet to comment on or dispute his involvement in the legislative blockage the National Assembly premised on security report, the former Kaduna State governor – repeatedly featuring on national television programmes – has consistently told the world that, despite that it was the same Tinubu that publicly and privately begged him to work with him, it was the same president that played the game for his legislative blockage seen by many public affairs analysts as deliberate and unjustifiable attempt by Tinubu to embarrass him.

El-Rufai continues to stand tall amidst some calculated media misrepresentation of t Social Democratic party (SDP)’s purported expulsion and banning of him for 30 years, as recently announced, which has since been dismissed as simply coming from unauthorized, disgruntled persons masquerading as leaders of the party.

The former Kaduna governor is now one of the leading figures in ADC — the opposition coalition platform.
