2027: Major Hamza Al-Mustapha joins SDP days after El-Rufai

By KEMI KASUMU
Dr. Hamza Al-Mustapha, a retired Major of the Nigerian Army and former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Nigeria’s Military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has officially joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The move marks a new phase in the Retired Army Officer’s political journey aimed at national development.
Accompanied by his team, Al-Mustapha arrived at the SDP headquarters in Abuja, where he was warmly received by party leaders and supporters.
He said his move to the party signals his commitment to leadership based on justice, security, and progress.
His defection comes days after former Governor of Kaduna Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, moved to the SDP.
El-Rufai has said that he and others, who are expected on board the train for better Nigeria, would move against the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration during the 2027 elections regardless of boast of the sitting president’s supporters.
El-Rufai’s movement into the SDP, which flagged off the coalition movement ahead of 2027, followed former President Muhammadu Buhari’s relocation from core North Daura, Katsina State back to his political home base of Kaduna, sensing the central role the three-time Nigeria’s ruler would play in the emerging power that 2027 transition will throw up.
Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (Ph.D) was known as one of Abacha’s closest associates during the military regime.
He has persistently advocated for better leaders that he said have eluded Nigeria especially in the recent years.
With his joining the SDP now, the stage set by El-Rufai is swelling up as more political figures that, when they come together, will be too formidable for Tinubu to face are expected as the event unfolds.
