Water scarcity hits Gusau, Zamfara State capital

By IBRAHIM KANOMA, Gusau

Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, has been hit by acute shortage of portable drinking water.

In most areas visited, children could be seen moving around with jerrycans and buckets in search of water.

They include Sabon Gari, GRA and Gada Biyu.

In response to the problems, the Managing Director, Zamfara State Water Board, Engr Buhari Dosara, said they arose from breakdown of machineries installed since the time Zamfara was under Sokoto State and Gusau town was a Local Government Headquarters.

He said Gusau is now a state capital with high demand of water as a result of influx of people and services that require water services leading to the facilities being overstretched.

He, further, disclosed that the state government was, however, seriously addressing the issues because, accordinf to him, some of the machines required to bring the facilities back to life have already been purchased.

He said the machines were awaiting installation as experts were expected to arrive the state for that purpose.

Engr. Dosara expressed confidence that, with the installation of new equipment, the problems emanating from water shortage would be over.

The managing director appealed to the people to exicise patience as government was on top of the situation.
