The US Treasury imposed sanctions against 42 enterprises associated with Sberbank. This is according to a statement posted on Wednesday on the website of the US Treasury.

“Treasury is designating the following 42 Sberbank subsidiaries for being owned or controlled by, or for having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, Sberbank.”

The US Treasury also notes that “all entities owned 50% or more, directly or indirectly, by Sberbank are blocked under E.O. 14024, even if not designated by OFAC (the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.)

The list includes, in particular, subsidiaries of Sberbank in Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine. It also includes Sberbank Europe AG, a subsidiary of Sberbank in Austria.

Earlier Wednesday, the US administration announced that it was imposing full blocking sanctions on Sberbank and Alfa-Bank.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to protect people “who have been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years.”

Western countries responded to the actions of the Russian authorities by slapping sanctions against physical and legal entities.
