Ukrainian troops shell Donetsk city center, kill 5 servicemen – DPR

The armed forces of Ukraine shelled the Donetsk city center on Tuesday evening, several projectiles exploded near a school and outside the Donbass Arena stadium, the territorial defense headquarters of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said.

“Armed formations of Ukraine attacked the center of Donetsk,” the headquarters said in its Telegram channel. “In the course of indiscriminate fire targeting the city center, Ukrainian projectiles exploded outside School No.54 and the Donbass Arena Stadium.”

The DPR mission to the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC) said the shelling attack occurred at about 20:05. In total, five 152mm-caliber projectiles were fired.

In a related report, Eduard Basurin, Deputy Chief of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) People’s Militia confirmed that five servicemen of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) were killed on Tuesday.

“During the day, five soldiers of the Donetsk People’s Republic were killed and 17 more were wounded while fighting for independence,” the Donetsk News Agency quoted him as saying.

Following a dramatic deterioration of the situation in Donbass on February 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 21 announced a decision to recognize the sovereignty of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

On February 24, Putin said that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation. He stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, but aimed to demilitarize and denazify the country.
