Ukraine committed a war crime by allowing the situation with drifting naval mines in the Black Sea, says retired Rear Admiral Cihat Yayci.

“It is a crime to unmoor mines. Using mines that cannot self-neutralize (in case of unmooring) is a crime. Planting mines that threaten lives and civilians is a crime. Ukraine has committed a crime here,” he said, according to the Yeni Safak.

Yayci, also on Al Jazeera from Istanbul on Wednesday, said the mines found recently and detonated on the Black Sea by Russian forces actually belonged to Ukraine.

He said the United Nations should query Ukraine over the mines as he described the act of planting them in the Black Sea as an act of irresponsibility.
