Sultan guides traditional rulers on role amid election season
*Says: “Receive visiting politicians but don’t play partisan politics”

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, has provided a guide to traditional rulers in Sokoto State over what their role should be amid election season, telling them to remain accessible to all politicians but maintain political neutrality.
The Sultan gave the advice on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when he held a meeting with district heads and other traditional authorities in the state at his palace in Sokoto, according to an official release by Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka.
He urged the traditional leaders to keep their doors open to politicians who may visit them to seek royal blessings, guidance and prayers, irrespective of their political parties.
The Sultan, however, cautioned the traditional rulers against direct involvement in partisan politics.
“You should receive politicians who visit you with cordiality and respect, but avoid directly engaging in partisan politics,” he said.
The meeting also featured discussions with the Hisbah authorities on planned regulations and measures aimed at promoting and safeguarding the moral upbringing of society.
The Sultan’s guidance underscores the traditional institution’s role as an avenue for peaceful engagement with all stakeholders while maintaining its neutrality during the political process.
