Sultan declares Sunday May 24 as Eid-el-Fitr

The Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) says Sunday May 24, 2020 equivalent to Shawwal 1, 2020 is Eid-el-Fitr.

This declaration was contained in a statement issued in Sokoto on Friday by Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.

Prof. Junaid said the Sultanate Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in conjunction with National Moon Sighting Committee did not receive any report from various Moon Sighting Committees across the country confirming the Sighting of New Moon of Shawwal 1441 AH, on Friday 22nd May, 2020 which was the 29th dayof Ramadan1441AH.

“Therefore, Saturday 23rd May, 2020 is the 30th day of the month of Ramadan 1441AH.

“His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, mni, the Sultan to f She koto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has accepted the report and accordinglydeckared Sunday 24th May, 2020 as the first day of Shawwal 1441AH (Day of Eid-El-Fitr).

“His Eminence, the Sultan facilitates with the Nigeria Muslim Ummah and wishes them Allah’s guidance and blessings.

“The Sultan while urging the Muslim Muslim Ummah that continue to pray for peace, prob gress and development of the country, he also wishes all Muslims a happy Ed-El-Fitr. May Allah (SWT) accept our religious deeds, Amin,” Prof. Junaid said.

Earlier on Thursday, the position of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs was made known as to what faithful should do in event the new moon was not sighted at the sunset on Friday..

The statement said, “If the moon is not sighted tomorrow Friday, it means Saturday 23rd May will be 30th Ramadan.”

According to a fresh statement signed by Deputy Secretary General of the NSCIA, Professor Salisu Shehu, today Friday, May 22, 2020, “The Council prays that Almighty Allah accepts our fasting and other virtuous acts in Ramadan and that we will have peaceful and blissful Eid celebrations. May Allah in His Infinite Mercy quicken the eradication of the Corona Virus in Nigeria and all over the world.”
