President of Guinea, General Mamadi Doumbouya, returned to the capital, Conakry, on Friday, August 14, 2026, after cutting short his annual holiday in Greece, amid widespread rumours concerning his health.
Doumbouya arrived in Conakry in what was described as a colourful and enthusiastic reception, with thousands of residents lining major roads to catch a glimpse of the president as his convoy made its way through the city.
His return came after days of speculation on social media and in public circles over his health, with some reports focusing on an apparent change in his physical appearance and alleged weight loss. The rumours had spread rapidly across Guinea, prompting heightened public interest in the president’s whereabouts and condition.

The president’s early return, however, fuelled further public speculation, particularly as it came against the backdrop of growing online discussions about his health.
His arrival in Conakry appeared to provide a measure of reassurance to supporters and members of the public who had been following the reports. The large crowds that gathered along the roads offered a visible demonstration of public interest in the president’s return.
The presidency has not indicated that Doumbouya’s return was prompted by any medical emergency. His appearance in Conakry on Friday was widely viewed as an opportunity to dispel concerns generated by the rumours circulating during his absence.
Doumbouya, who came to power following the September 2021 military coup that removed President Alpha Condé, has since overseen Guinea’s transition under a military-led administration.
His return now places the focus back on the country’s political transition and the government’s programme as Guinea continues to navigate its path toward constitutional civilian rule.
