Power supply problems remain in Ukraine’s capital Kiev and 17 administrative regions of the country, including Odessa, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said late on Friday.
“The power supply situation remains problematic in 17 regions and the capital. [The difficult situation remains in] Kiev and the surrounding region, the situation is dire in the Odessa Region and also in the regions of Vinnitsa and Ternopol,” the president said in a video address on his official Telegram channel.
In his words, the majority of regions were resorting to scheduled power outages, aimed at stabilizing the power supply system. “Emergency power cuts occurred mainly in the Odessa Region and Kiev,” he said.
Ukraine’s Strana news portal reported that angry Odessa residents blocked a road in the city, protesting against regular and lengthy power outages. The head of the region’s administration, Maxim Marchenko, said on Thursday the power supply situation in the region remained very difficult. In his words, “everything that can be cut off has been cut off in the region, but even this is not enough.” Some households have been without power for more than a day, he continued. “Today, an unprecedented decision was made to turn off several working lines to support those that are not working,” the head of the Odessa region administration added.
According to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Denis Monastyrsky, over 30 infrastructure facilities were damaged in the country as a result of strikes on November 15. The most massive blow since the escalation of the conflict in February was dealt to the energy system of Ukraine on Tuesday, Energy Minister German Galushchenko reported. Missiles hit both generation facilities and the power transmission system. Emergency power cuts were implemented in some Ukrainian cities, the energy minister added.
