Residents of Essien Udim Local Government Area in Imo State were panicked and confused, according to a recent article by Punch Newspapers, as a result of the Nigerian military’s recent operation in the Ikot Akpan forests.

Troops chase gunmen believed to be members of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, terrorist group to their hideouts deep inside the thick forest, where they launched an air strike to ensure that no killer gunman escapes.

Residents were said to be terrified and panicked due to the sound of bomb blasts and gun battles.

The DEFENDER, however, gathered that the panic of the residents could not have meant that they are displeased over the military raids as suggested by insinuation of the media report.

A respondent said, “Anybody or community who does not want to ear the sound of bombs or gun battles should not harbour terrorists because, the security forces in the country have the constitutional powers to enforce defence, security and safety of any part of the country. So, those who PUNCH reported to have been panic could not have meant that they are displeased that the military forces are doing their job.”

The military raid was coming a day after a series of attacks by IPOB terrorists were carried out across Imo State.

They attacked and set fire to a police station while also releasing some arrested suspects and carting them away with weapons. The attackers also invaded the Owerri Correctional Centre, setting it ablaze and allowing over 1000 inmates to escape.

Following the incident, the immediate past Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Adamu, before he was removed, confirmed that the attacks were carried out by IPOB.

Security experts in Nigeria, according to the media report, it have already made it known that the recent attacks in the South East Nigeria are coordinated attacks, possibly because security men are being attacked and assassinated for the past few weeks.

The military operation was carried out in the state to ensure that the evil ones, who attacked the correctional centre are not left unpunished.
