Onyeka Onwenu buried in Lagos

In line with wishes of the deceased to be buried privately, the Nigerian music industry mourned as it saw to the last abode one of its most iconic figures, Onyeka Onwenu, on Friday August 30, 2024.

The DEFENDER recalls that Onwenu died at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, to where she was rushed as she slumped at after successfully completing her musical performance at a function, on July 30. She was aged 72.

The “Elegant Stallion”, as she was affectionately known, was laid to rest after a touching funeral service was held in her honour at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos.

This globalized multi-lingual newspaper reports that Onyeka Onwenu’s powerful voice, captivating stage presence, and socially conscious lyrics resonated with generations of fans.

Members of the Onwenu family, friends and clergymen gathered at the Ebony Vaults’ graveside, in Ikoyi, to pay their last respect with tributes pouring in from various quarters, as Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian music and her unwavering commitment to social justice were celebrated.

Onyeka Onwenu’s body was afterward lowered into here grave amidst encomiums, after which her two sons, Abraham and Tijani, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the public and dignitaries who attended the funeral of their late mother.

Former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, Mr. Peter Obi, and Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, were among prominent dignitaries who made it their physical presence counted at the final burial ceremony and interment of singer, actress, author and activist Onyeka Onwenu on Friday August 30, 2024.
