Oloyede, Pantami join list of Sokoto Caliphate’s honorary title holders

Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede and immediate past Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, have been approved for turbaning as Sokoto Caliphate’s honorary traditional title holders.
Approvals for their turbaning were communicated via the duo’s letters of appointment for the titles, which were announced at the Shaikh Usman Bn Fodiyo Week 1446AH/2024 held in Sokoto on Saturday November 2, 2024.
Whereas, the letter for Professor Oloyede appointing him as Kuliyan Sokoto is believed to have been transited to the Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), The DEFENDER can authoritatively report that Professor Pantami, who was physically present as Chief Guest Lecturer at the 11th election of the Week held in the International Conference Centre, Kasarawa, Sokoto State last Saturday, was presented his letter by the Sultan as Majidadin Daurar Usmaniyyah in appreciation of his immense contributions to the promotion of Islam, Nigeria and Sokoto Caliphate.
According to the Sultan, while announcing that of Majidadi, the main turbaning would take place at a date to be announced later, same for the Kuliya.
In a letter dated 2nd November 2024 and titled CONFEREMENT OF TRADITIONAL TITLE OF KULIYAN SOKOTO, the Sultanate Council Sokoto informed the former President of the International Association of Universities Vice Chancellors that, “in recognition and appreciation of your invaluable contribution to the development of the Muslim Ummah, the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Sokoto State, Nigeria and humanity in general, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto, has approved conferement of traditional title of Kuliyan Sokoto on you today 2nd November 2024.
”The details of the formal turbanning ceremony will be communicated later. While wishing you the best of luck and Allah’s guidance in your future endeavors, please accept my heartfelt congratulations.”
Before the latest set of honorary title holders, President of Nigeria (1999-2007) Olusegun Obasanjo, Governors of Sokoto State (1999-2007), Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (2007-2015), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (2015-2023), Deputy Governor of Sokoto State (2019-2023), Alhaji Manir Dan’Iya, and former senior creative designer at American car company General Motors and Director General of the Nigeria’s National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Alhaji Jelani Aliyu, and several other Nigerians have at different times been turbaned as title holders of the Usmaniyyah Throne of the Sokoto Caliphate.
