A book titled, ‘Polygyny With Mercy’, launched in Abuja on Sunday has been described as an intellectual work that shows polygyny as a social system meant to serve true believers, who are ready to obey Allah’s injunctions.

At the event, held in the Conference Hall of National Mosque, Abuja, participants posited that polygyny in Islam is not meant to cause hardship for women, rather it is meant to create conducive atmosphere for truly obedient husband and wife so as to enjoy family life.

This assertion was particularly made by a Lagos-based legal practitioner Baŕrister Ahmad Adetola Kazeem, while addressing participants at a book presentation ceremony.

According to him, “Almighty Allah who created us knows very well that most men would not be satisfied with only one wife, that was why he created polygyny window for those who are capable to marry more than one to do so in-order to sustain moral rectitude.”

He added that marrying only one wife and flirting about with girlfriends and mistresses is not acceptable in Islam.

In his welcome address, author of the book, Barrister Abdul-Lateef Abdullahi, described adultery and fornication as grievous sins in Islam but noted it is still commonly indulged in, by many Muslims

This evil, he said, is perpetrated despite the fact that Allah has provided lawful polygyny window to dissuade true believers from commiting the sin.

Abdullahi warned that taking the path of ‘one man – one wife’ and secretly cohabiting with another woman illegally is an offence purnishable by Allah here and hereafter.

He, therefore, enjoined Muslim women to view polygamy as a merciful and lawful practice that could protect Muslim families from disgraceful immoral practices.

Barr. Abdul-Lateef Abdullahi stated that the book is a necessary tool, if properly read and internalised in every Muslim family, and could lead to abundant prosperity here and hereafter.

He paid glowing tributes to his mentors including the former Grand Kadi of Kwara State, late Hon. Justice Muttalub Ahmad Ambali, Prof. Nimat Modupe Abdul-Raheem of Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin and Justice Ambali’s daughter, and his departed uncle, late Alhaji Sulaiman Abdullahi and Alhaji Jamiu Olowo, who all died sequencially this year.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive them and repose their souls in Al-Jannatul-Firdaous.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Ciroma of Ebirraland and former Clerk of the National Assembly Alhaji Muhammad Sani Ataba Omolori, praised the author whom he said had written two books before the new one.

He added that “addressing cogent issues in our lives interllectually aas been done by the author would go a long way in educating the masses better about religious teachings and values.”

He, therefore, purchased six copies of the book – Polygyny With Mercy – at a cost of N100,000 per each copy.

Other launchers of the book included Tafida of Ebirraland, Alhaji Hamzat Usman, who did the launching along with few of his friends at cost of N1 million.

Many dignitaries that attended the event included the Registrar/CEO of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, the Director-General of National Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Professor Muhammad Tawfiq Ladan, who was represented by a Director of the Institute Mr. Lukman Olomada, Imam Fouad Adeyemi as well as Barrister Shehu Ahmed Moyosore, the Chairman of Northern Zone of Ilorin Emirate Descendants’ Progressive Union (IEDPU).

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria was represented by its National Coordinator and father of the author, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, who donated N50,000 on behalf of the Group for the literary and academic works of the author.
