Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide Holds Strategic Meeting in Lagos, Moves to End Leadership Disputes

Another major resolution of the meeting was the proposed inauguration of a new President-General who would provide effective leadership and work towards uniting Ndigbo under a legitimate and legally recognised umbrella of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation in Lagos.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide has held a strategic meeting in Lagos State to deliberate on critical issues affecting Ndigbo in Lagos, particularly matters concerning the leadership, unity and administration of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
This was disclosed by media office of the Assembly in a statement dated Friday August 28, 2026 and circulated to the media.
The meeting, attended by elders and notable Igbo leaders in Lagos, focused extensively on the need to resolve the various disputes and legal cases surrounding the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos and to establish a legitimate and generally recognised leadership structure for the organisation.
The Assembly resolved to work towards bringing an end to what it described as multiple and prolonged legal cases in various courts, while also addressing the activities of individuals allegedly parading themselves as President, executive members and other officials of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos without the necessary legal documentation or authority.

The participants also expressed concern over the manner in which some individuals allegedly declare themselves Eze Ndigbo in their various places of residence without following the established traditional processes or obtaining the appropriate legal and institutional documentation required under Nigerian law.
The meeting stressed the importance of ensuring that traditional and organisational leadership positions are occupied through due process, in accordance with relevant laws and established customs, rather than through unilateral declarations.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Elder Chukwuma Njoku, Media Aide to Amb. Chief Tony Obizoba, Director-General, Strategic Planning and Implementation of the Apex Igbo Socio-Cultural Organisations, emphasised the importance of unity and a common voice among Ndigbo.
Njoku said the time had come for Igbo leaders and stakeholders to work together under a properly registered and legally recognised body for the advancement and wellbeing of Ndigbo both in Nigeria and abroad.
According to him, the Lagos meeting is part of a broader series of consultations and strategic engagements currently being undertaken to address existing challenges and reposition Ndigbo on a progressive, united and sustainable path.
He explained that the consultations were initiated by the Director-General, Strategic Planning and Implementation, Amb. Chief Tony Obizoba, as part of efforts to strategically reposition Ndigbo and strengthen the structures of the Igbo socio-cultural leadership.
The organisers said the objective of the ongoing consultations is to promote unity, restore confidence in the leadership structure, ensure adherence to due process and create a more effective platform for addressing issues affecting Ndigbo.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, lawful processes and the collective interest of Ndigbo, stressing that all stakeholders must work together to build a stronger and more credible leadership structure.
