Former Nigerian President, ‎Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has lauded the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Osun West Senatorial District, Engr. Adelere Oriolowo for contributing significantly to the uplift of the Owu nation.

He acknowledged Oriolowo’s high sense of commitment that had brought about unity and stability among Owu people across the world.

This was even as Oriolowo said at the occasion that his senatorial ambition was aimed at fulfilling a life-long ambition of serving the common people.

The erstwhile Nigeria’s President gave the commendation on Saturday  while addressing sons and daughters of Owu ethnic nationality at the 27th Owu National‎ Convention tagged “Owu Day 2018”, held at Kings Riverside Holiday Resort, Odo-Oba, Iwo, Osun.

Obasanjo described Oriolowo as a good ambassador of Owu sub-Yoruba ethnic nationality, prayed for his success at the poll.

Obasanjo said, “The choice of this unique venue by the host (Oriolowo) is a reflection of his passion for the development of Owu nation.

“We have been doing national conventions at different Owu Kingdoms but this place ‎stands out. So, I commend Mogaji Owu in Iwo, Adelere Oriolowo for securing this place for us.

“I am extremely glad ‎and I appreciate you so much, may God in His infinite mercy increase you in wealth and strength.

“I pray God to answer your prayer and bestow you with all your heart desires.”

Speaking on the theme of the Convention which is “Strengthen The Owu Nation”, the former President appealed to Owu people of Yoruba extraction to always champion unity and reflect the same in all they do.

He called on the traditional rulers across Owu kingdoms to chat a new course for the growth and development of Owu nation.

According to Obasanjo, Owu people have distinguished themselves as one of the powerful Yoruba socio-ethnic groups that had made significant impact on national development.

“We are known everywhere and we are known for good things as a major ethnic nationality.

“So, I want us to maintain this feat, I want us to continue to shake the world and make difference in all human endeavours as we have been doing.

“We must continue to be our brothers’ keepers. We must begin to strengthen the bond of unity and togetherness as we all know that ‘together will stand, divided will fall’.

“We must begin to reflect the theme of this year’s convention which is “Strengthen the Owu Nation” in all we do and ensure that the star of our race shines forever”, Obasanjo advised.

Oriolowo, while speaking, said that he has no doubt in his mind that Osun West senatorial district would enjoy responsible representation at the Upper chamber of the National Assembly when elected come next year.

“Oriolowo, while speaking, said that he has no doubt in his mind that Osun West senatorial district would enjoy responsible representation at the Upper chamber of the National Assembly when elected come next year.

“This is a zone with lots of potential and we would stop at nothing at ensuring that these are tapped adequately for the benefit of our people.”

Earlier, the Chairman Supreme Council of Owu Obas who doubled as Olowu of Owu-Kuta, Oba Hammed Adekunle Makama commended the APC Osun West Senatorial Candidate, Oriolowo for being the bulwark of support for all and sundry.

He called on the Owu people to remain united and love one another in the interest of growth and development of Owun nation.

Oba Makama, who described Owu people as major ethnic nationality that have contributed meaningfully to national integration, unity and development, urged his people to maintain the strength of togetherness which they are known for.

However, ‎the convention which had in attendance virtually all the traditional rulers in Owu kingdoms across Osun, Ogun, Kwara, Lagos and Oyo states has become the annual celebration of unification of Owu people who were hitherto dispersed from their homestead after 1821-1826 war.

The convention is held annually to review and chat a new course for the growth and development of Owu nation.
