The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC), Engr Fidet Okhiria, has unveiled ambitious plans to expand the organisation’s operations and infrastructure network, aimed at enhancing transportation efficiency and connectivity throughout Nigeria, according to a media report.

Speaking to journalists during a ministerial retreat in Abuja on “Cascading Signed Performance Bond” with the Minister of Transportation, Okhiria revealed the imminent launch of operations on the Lagos to Kano narrow gauge route.

He emphasised the focus on bolstering the fleet to ensure optimal service delivery.

Additionally, commuters can anticipate the commencement of services on the Port Harcourt to Aba route in the upcoming quarter, promising improved accessibility and convenience for travelers.

Okhiria highlighted the significant strides made on the Kaduna to Kano corridor, with efforts concentrated on aligning the narrow gauge to accommodate the standard gauge.

The completion of this alignment, currently at 80%, is expected to streamline operations and enhance route transitions for passengers, extending from Makarfi to Kano.

Further emphasising the progress, Okhiria noted ongoing formation works from Makarfi to Kaduna, indicating steady advancement towards completion.

Expressing optimism, Okhiria projected that, barring unforeseen challenges, the Abuja to Kaduna route could become operational by the middle of the following year.

Looking ahead, Okhiria expressed confidence in the NRC’s ability to extend connectivity beyond Kaduna, envisioning seamless travel from Abuja to Kano by mid-2025.

He underscored the NRC’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and driving economic growth nationwide, stating, “As the NRC prioritizes expansion and modernization efforts, these developments signal a promising future for railway transportation in Nigeria. They address the evolving needs of the populace and foster socio-economic progress across the country.”
