‘My Wife Threatened to Poison Our Son’, Man Begs Court to End Marriage

“My lord, I am fed up with my wife and no longer interested in going further with our marriage,” he pleaded.
A man simply identified as Mauroof has asked a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Latifat, alleging that she had subjected him and members of the family to persistent threats, hostility and domestic unrest.
Mauroof made the allegations while testifying before the court in a petition seeking an end to the marriage.
According to him, his troubles began after Latifat moved into his home as his wife, claiming that their matrimonial home had since been characterised by frequent disagreements and what he described as her hostile and unruly behaviour.
He alleged that his wife had repeatedly threatened to implicate him and have him sent to prison.
The petitioner further told the court that their first child eventually left home after Latifat allegedly threatened to poison him.
“Our first child left home after she threatened to poison him,” Mauroof told the court.
He also alleged that his wife’s disagreements were not limited to members of the family, claiming that she frequently clashed with their neighbours.
Mauroof additionally accused Latifat of engaging in what he described as fetish practices, alleging that his brother once saw her gathering sand from the four corners of their house for what he believed was a diabolical purpose.
“My brother caught her gathering sand from the four corners of our house for evil purpose,” he alleged.
The petitioner said he had become fed up with the situation and no longer wished to continue with the marriage.
“My lord, I am fed up with my wife and no longer interested in going further with our marriage,” he pleaded.
He consequently asked the court to dissolve the union and issue an order restraining Latifat from allegedly threatening or interfering with his private life.
Latifat, however, was absent from the proceedings despite reportedly being served with the court processes.
The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, subsequently adjourned the case and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on the defendant.
The allegations made by Mauroof remain claims before the court, as Latifat has yet to appear and respond to them.
